Why? Because he has seen
and experienced many tough situations in his life, and infact, he has also done many hard things
in his life. Like for example, once he
swore, that he will run in Badwater 135.
If you don't know, let me tell you, Badwater 135 race is one of the toughest
foot-race in the world. In which people
like you and me, can't enter. Because to
enter here, it is must to be a highly skilled person, and he also has to complete many tests and
requirements.
Like, one of the requirement is,
before entering here you have to complete multiple 100 miles race.
Now what does 100 miles mean?
160km. Now, David also
didn't complete this requirement. So, he
signed up to complete 100 miles race. But
the problem was that, David had to run 100
miles in 24 hours! On average, it equals
to 4 marathon runs.
Whereas David was not a runner person. He didn't even run more than 1 mile in the
last 6 months! He was not prepared at
all. He was afraid, but still he took part in the race.
And the race started. At
starting, he was not having any problem.
He kept running. As soon as 25
miles were completed, he started getting tired, he started questioning himself!
That whether he can do it or not?
Till now out of those 4 marathons only 1 marathon was finished! And 3 more marathons were left. But still, somehow he completed 50 miles.
As soon as half the race was completed, he says, his legs started getting heavy like
a hard metal! His leg was hurting so
much and felt heavy, that he couldn't
even walk! He tells how he used to feel
current in his whole body at every step.
But still, he kept running.
Somehow, he completed 70 miles.
But now, he couldn't take even a single step! He lay straight on the ground! Maximum people quit after coming to such a
point! In fact, they would have quit
long before this! Because this race was
really very hard. David was also thinking
about quitting.
But then he took his focus
off the race for a while, and started
thinking about his three psychological needs!
He asked himself three questions!
He played those answer in his mind.
And as soon as he started getting answers to those questions, suddenly a new spirit came inside him! Slowly, one step at a time, he started
walking.
While walking, he gradually started increasing his speed. And somehow he completed this race. What were those three needs, three questions, which helped David to do these tough things. The author of book 'Do Hard Things' says, we, ordinary people, have a lot of misunderstandings
related to hard things, which is very
important for us to eliminate.
What are those misunderstandings?
Let me tell you one by one!
First misunderstanding is, people
think that if you have to do a tough work,
you have to remove all the focus from yourself and focus all on that
goal! Have to apply brutal force, need
motivation, and then you will achieve
your goal. Author calls this thing 'Traditional
toughness'. But the 'Science of toughness'
says opposite to it.
In reality, you'll have to do something different to be tough. What's that?
First, you'll have to focus on your psychological needs. Specifically, three psychological needs which
every human being has. First one is 'The
Need of Autonomy'.
When David took part in this race,
none of his teachers forced him, that
'David, you'll have to participate in this race, or else you won't get a good job, you won't be able to take admission in good
college, you won't be able to get good
salary!
No! David took this decision
himself. He had autonomy! You must have seen that when people force us, that 'You'll have to do this thing, do it'.
Until we understand that thing why we have to do that thing, till then there is a lot of laziness even in
doing the easy thing! Hard thing is a
far cry! So, if you want to do any hard
work, going to Gym, reading books or
whatever.
The very first thing which you need, your need should be fulfilled, that is
Autonomy. A research has also been done
on this, runners who were taking VO2
test, it was observed that those runners
were pushing themselves more, were able
to run well, compared to those whose
speed and inclination was already set, and
they didn't have any other option.
Likewise, David Goggins always had a choice, if he wanted, he could have quit the race
anytime. but still he didn't. Why? Because it was his choice. He knew why he had taken part in this race, which you will come to know in third need. This is first psychological need. 2nd psychological need which you'll need to
do hard thing, that is Competency.
Realizing that we have already achieved so much. Like when David Goggins was feeling like
quitting, then he started remembering! that this is not the first hard thing which
he is doing in his life, he has done
many such important things before!
Like, for example, the navy
seal training he did, US Airforce
training he did, all that was very
tough. Apart from this, he did 4000 pull
ups in 17 hours!
by which he made a world record!
When he started thinking all this,
a very good energy started coming inside him! He started getting confidence, that 'I can do it'. While walking, he was thinking about all
these things, which gave him more confidence
to run.
It may be that we have not done such a big thing like David
Goggins in our life, to feel
competitive, but again, we must have
done some things! If nothing, then the
exams you have cracked in your life, any
small actions you have taken, remembering
those things, can make us feel competent.
Similar happened with David Goggins. Infact, author says, the marathon runners, they also think about it before quitting, that 'I've already run this much, why to quit after coming halfway?'
And when he looks back to see how far he has come, then he gets the enthusiasm to finish the
whole marathon.
Similarly, when you have to do hard things, then you can also reflect back on those things
which you achieved in your life. Competency
will fulfill your second psychological need.
And then third comes, the psychological need of 'Feeling of Belonging'.
Do you know why he took this challenge?
There was a strong reason behind it. The thing was that he had to raise money for 'Special Operation Warrior Foundation', which is a non profit organization, which used to provide scholarships to the kids of those special ops, who lost their lives in battlefield. This was a strong reason, which motivated him to run more.
When the mixer of these three things started, all these things together gave energy to
David Goggins, to complete the whole
race. Similarly, if you also focus on these
three psychological needs, then you also
can make hard things easy for you! Now,
there would be a few over-smart people, who
will say 'Why have you rote hard things?'
Why is it important to do hard things?
Well, it is a fact, if you
have to do any great thing, usually, it
would be hard to achieve. If it were
easy everyone would do it!
You yourself check your memory,
the proudest moment of your life,
which make you feel proud, those
would have come from doing tough things.
Like, cracking a tough exam, giving
an important presentation, making money
or starting a business.
Or in my case, creating a YouTube channel, my channel makes me feel proud. Starting YouTube channel or starting business was hard for me, but these hard things are giving me confidence and results in my life, making money for me. So, do hard things everyday.
And how can you do hard things?
You must have understood the psychological need for that, But after that you will not understand another thing which is understanding 'Traditional toughness - why the science of toughness'.
As I told you one difference earlier, similarly we come to the second difference
between science and toughness. According
to traditional toughness, people say that
when we do some hard work and we feel
pain, then we should not focus on that
pain, and leaving it, our focus should
be on working only.
It is same like, for
example, you are trying to do some work and
again and again I keep pinching you and disturb you again and again and I tell you, don't focus on pain and focus
on work.
So, will it sound logical to you? Obviously not! Pain gets attention. So what to do about it?
Well, Science of Toughness says,
instead of ignoring the pain, we
should acknowledge the pain, and should
achieve equanimity.
Now what does equanimity means?
Let me explain you through an experiment. In a study, researchers did an experiment, where they wanted to see, how various people handle the pain. For this, they invited some normal people and
some meditators.
They sent normal people and meditators in the FRI machine, one by
one. And after that, they touched a hot
rod to their skin. When they touched,
they got similar results from normal people and meditators.
When both got the discomfort of heavy dose, then a small part of their brain which is
called Amygdala, which scientists calls
'the alarm system of our body' got activated.
But after that something interested happened.
Those who were non meditators,
their Amygdala remained activated for long time after the rod removal. Means it was not working! Whereas the Amygdala of meditators got
activated very much, but it came on base
line very soon!
Meditators bring themselves to a peaceful state even after
suffering a lot of pain! And this is
called equanimity. And if learn how to
keep equanimity maintained, then we also
can do various tough things.
Do you know, why it happens?
Meditators have meditated for at least 10,000 hours or more. Due to which they were able to control their brain very well. Now you will say whether I have to become a meditator to do hard things?
No, it's not like that! Author
tells a three step procedure to do similar things, which if we do, we can achieve equanimity with the help of
it.
What are these three steps?
The First Step
The first step is - Zoom out and explain. In the experiment, it was seen that 30 percent
of the children, who were given tough
tasks to do!
When those children were talking as third person, and were explaining how they were feeling, the activity in the Prefrontal cortex got
increased. Now you will say what happens
with this!
The thing is that, Amaygdala and Prefrontal Cortex balance out
each other. If activity in Prefrontal cortex
is increasing, then it will
automatically reduce the activity in Amaygdala.
And vice versa. So, the first
thing you can do is when you are having
any difficulty, then firstly do, zoom out
and explain.
For example, if you are doing any home work, or working on your goal, and you are feeling very bored in it, then you start talking as a third person in your brain. For example, I am writing script and I am feeling very frustrated , and I don't understand how to write the script, how to work on my goal.
I would say, 'See, how Zeeshan is getting frustrated, he is not understanding things, or he is feeling irritated. When I will see after zooming out, then I will be able to handle my emotions
better, and would be able to keep myself
calm. This first step is important. It
will help you to some extent.
The Second Step
Second step is Reappraise. Let's
take an example to do this. Like, for
example, you go to gym and do the first
set of biceps. You work hard to hit the
first set! But when you go to try other
set, you are not able to do it properly.
There is no proper form and anything else. And you don't do second set properly. Someone other helps you. In this situation, you have two options.
First thing, you can think,
I don't have such power to lift this weight. This is the first thing. Or, you can say, Today after so long I have lifted so much
weight and my muscles are getting broken. Means after few days these muscles will
recover again, and I will become stronger
than before.
This is called Reappraise. Means,
instead of seeing things negatively, trying
to see things positively. How, the tough
work we are doing today, is giving me
pain for now, but in coming time, it
will help me to become healthy strong, rich, or
help me to get into a good relationship.
Likewise, if you reappraise good things,
whole game will start changing.
The Third Step
And along-with it, you have to follow the third step which is, 'This shall too pass'. I told you the example of meditators, Those people who were able to calm their pain
and get on the base line.
why they were able to do so?
Because they had done meditation thousands and thousands of hours. When a person meditates for how long, then he understands one thing that whatever our feelings and emotions are temporary. The pain we are having is also temporary.
Infact everything is temporary.
Which means that no matter how much you are in pain right now, and no matter how bad you are feeling, when you go to do something difficult, no
matter how much pain you are feeling, how
much bored you are feeling, that feeling
will come and go.
This shall too pass. If you
work by focusing these 3-step well, then
it will be easy for you to do difficult things.
But along with this, remember one more last difference, between traditional toughness and
science of toughness. Traditional toughness says that, No matter how bad things are happening, there should always be confidence inside.
You should work by using brutal force always. Whereas the Science of Confidence says, it is not necessary that you always remain
100% confident. Like, for example,
author says, when someone goes to run a
marathon, newcomers in marathon run
faster in enthusiasm. They think,'I'll do
these things'.
But as time passes and their stamina ends, after sometime, people who are running
fastest are found lying in some corner of the road. While those who are professionals have done
marathon many times, and they know how
tough it is, they are already prepared.
And they respects the race and keep walking slowly. Due to which they are able to complete the
marathon. Author says, he had a friend in
military who used to say, 'An ounce of
doubt keeps me sharp'.
It's good to have a little doubt in yourself! And experiments were also done on this, US army survival training course was also
done on this. There it was seen that
those who were very confident, that they
would crack it for sure, when they
started survival training, and started
seeing that things have become difficult.
they started panicking that what will happen now?
I can't do this! Those who had a little doubt, that 'this training course
would be difficult, I have to walk
properly', they performed better. So author says, 'Remember one thing'. Always expect tough times. If you under estimate things which you are
going to do, and when things won't happen
according to you, you will panic and
quit.
If you already assume that getting rich is hard, starting a YouTube channel would be hard, and it's not easy! Won't happen in a couple
of months This short term pessimization
will help you to become optimistic in long term. And it should happen. Be pessimistic in short term, but optimistic in long term.
These are some important things from the book 'Do Hard Things' that you have to remember! If I tell you after revising, then first of all you have to remember that your psychological needs should be complete. You have three psychological needs. First is Autonomy. To be able to do or not to do things on one's
own! Always give yourself choice.
If your parents are saying that you have to study, then instead of feeling that I have no
autonomy, I will have to study. Then
give yourself choice. Either I will
study in morning or in evening. It's my
choice, when to read. Start doing things
on your own!
This will fulfill your first psychological need which is autonomy! Then focus on competency. Keep thinking about the things you have
achieved in your life. And third, 'Generate a feeling of Belonging'.
Keep a strong reason, that
why are going to do that hard thing, for
whom, you are going to do. It's done! After this, to do the hard things, you have
to remember that you should know how to
pacify Amaygdala, whenever you are going
into a painful situation.
And how can you do that?
To do that, there are three steps. First, zoom out and explain. See yourself in third person and talk. Second, Reappraise. Start seeing whatever situation is happening in a positive light! And third, remember, this shall too pass.
This is also done. After
learning all these things, remember third thing. Whatever things you will do in life will be
tough! It would not be easy.
Be a little pessimistic, but
be optimistic for long term. A thing
related to this has also been told in 'homosapiens' book. In which author tells, we are homosapiens. You know.
why we humans were able to survive so much?
Because we had confidence and were afraid also. Those who had confidence, used to go even in front of the lion to fight. used to do dangerous things that caused them to die. But those who were confident that we can survive, but were also scared, those people have been able to survive in actual, because of which this race is moving forward. So, keep a little doubt. But also remember, you can do great things.
